Jonas Brothers interview

Kevin Jonas sent to camp to mend his heart
Kevin Jonas was sent to camp to recover from his broken heart.
The 21-year-old Jonas Brothers singer admits he was so devastated when his girlfriend broke up with him his mother sent him away to help him forget about her.
He told Top of the Pops magazine: “The best way to get over a break-up is not thinking about it and getting away from it. A girl broke up with me and I was devastated so my mom sent me to camp. It was awesome.
“You learn that it’s not the end of the world, and it’s hard, but you’ve got to realise it does get better.”
Despite his heartbreak, Kevin admits he and his siblings Joe and Nick - who all wear purity rings to signify their vow to abstain from premarital sex - are often pursued by young girls who will do anything to get close to them.
He said: “We have a very good security team who keep us very protected, but we’ve definitely had our moments. We’ve had fans running on to highways to chase our tour bus. They’ve even tried to climb up wire fences to get near us.”

Guess who wears Prada cologne? Yep, the one and only Joe Jonas. Thanks Popstar!

new Demi Lovato music video
Demi Lovato has started filming a music video to support “The Gift of a Friend”, a theme song for the next installment of “Tinker Bell” movie franchise. She is photographed wearing a sun dress and dancing around trees in a Hollywood park.
On the day Demi shoots the video, she posts a message on her Twitter, stating, “Shot the very girly/ fairy-esque music video for the theme song of the newest Tinkerbelle movie.. ‘The Gift Of A Friend’.” Unfortunately, there hasn’t any clue regarding when the video will come out. But, fans can peek the on-set pics of the video on Celebrity Mania.
Beside contributing to the soundtrack of the upcoming Disney Channel’s film, Demi Lovato is also busy working on her own record. She has a new effort titled “Here We Go Again” and plans to showcase several new songs from the album during her upcoming summer tour with David Archuleta.

Jonas Brothers interview
i like this one (:
Jonas Brothers interview with MyKindaPlace: What's the best freebie you've ever been given? Nick: Whenever meals are taken care of, that always a good one. Kevin: Yeah, sometimes we'll go to a restaurant and people will just pick up the tab for us! Nick: Yeah a fan will just pick up our tab and it's like, shocking!
Our management team gave us some Rolexes as a gift for the start of our tour last year, that was cool. Kevin: Yeah, we get phones and stuff sometimes too. It's cool! Who's the most famous person in your mobile? Joe: Vanilla Ice?! Kevin: You have Vanilla Ice's number? That's awesome! Joe: Yeah we crossed
paths at some point..!
What was the last text message you received? Kevin: 'Time to start interviews' from our assistant. What's the most cash you've ever splashed on one thing? Kevin: We try to be wise with our money but we bought a home together,
so that was pretty big! Nicest celebrity encounter?
Kevin: Celine Dion. She was awesome, she was so complimentary and super-sweet and super-nice. Joe: Matt Damon. He was so nice, he even prayed before we went on stage with us, and just hung out with us and stuff. He was so cool.
Which celeb reality show would you do if you had no choice? Joe: I'd do Amazing Race which is this thing in the US where you have a partner and you have 80 days to go around the entire world, and you just run with backpacks and stuff. And there's teams of like six or seven people.
Nick: Yeah they usually do it with like a struggling couple and it's how they bond. It's amazing! Joe: I'd do it with my best friend John. Nick: Yeah it'd be cool to do it with a best mate. Or we'd make quite a good team together too!
Would you ever get your kit off and pose in the buff, and if yes, how much?
N/A Tell us some juicy celeb gossip. Joe: Nick doesn't sleep! Nick: I do! Joe:
He doesn't sleep very much! Nick: No! My thing is that I'll sleep if I get a good 12
hours or something, but if I know I've got to get up early in the morning I'll just choose not to! I feel good though! He says I just walk around in my hotel room! Joe: You do! I'll wake up and just see feet walking around or something!

Taylor Swift Today Show
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
Taylor Swift performing at Today Show Rockerfeller Center in NYC. Thx Lilli
& Sophia. Pix performances under. Myspace blog: Hi. I'm nocturnal. Help. So.. This is not smart. This. Being awake at 2:47 AM. You know why? Because my wake up call is at 5:00 AM. I'm playing on the Today show tomorrow/in a few hours, and I'm very excited about it. So excited, in fact,
That I haven't really gotten around to sleeping. I've found my attention being drawn to so many different things that I can't possibly sleep. For example: My hotel room has motion censor lighting. So when I stand up or anything moves on the floor, little lights come on at your feet to show you where you're going.
No light switches needed. In my delirious state, I've been making jokes with myself. Every time something triggers the censor lighting, I say 'Witchcraft!' or 'EVIL!'. Then I laugh hysterically. Then I sit there for a few seconds absorbing how lame I sound/look/am at this very moment in time. At 2:47 AM. Talking
to the motion censor lighting.
My dad is along the ride for this trip, hanging out and talking to every person he comes in contact with. He's a social butterfly, and loves being on tour. He loves it so much, he thinks it's absolutely hilarious to mess with me and try to..
..embarrass me as much as possible. For example: Liz and I are walking into the hotel lobby after returning from dinner. It's a quiet, serene, beautiful hotel lobby and we're walking in when..Screaming voice from out of nowhere: HEY! THAT'S TAYLOR SWIFT!! Me: Dad. Please stop doing that.
It's pretty priceless having my dad out here with me. Tonight I went shopping at Top Shop in New York with the band. I got purple shoes. I'm really excited about the purple shoes, and I just needed to tell someone. I got purple shoes. Ok.
That's done. Tomorrow, after the performance on the Today show, I'll fly back
to Nashville and record a lot of new songs I've written in the last few weeks. I'm really excited about that. I want to get back to the tour though. Bad. I miss it every time I'm gone for a day. I've never had more fun doing anything in my life than I have on the Fearless tour. Thank you so much to everyone who has come to see the show. I can't even tell you how unreal it is for me, being up there..
..looking at those crowds. I just never thought I'd luck out like this. I'm really excited because Dateline NBC has been following me around for the last three months, video taping me planning this tour. They've put together a one-hour special about my tour, and it's airing some time within the next two weeks.
I'll keep you posted on the exact date.
I'd love for you to see the months of work leading up to me getting to put on
this show. Also, I learned how to make a smoothie. It's very ground-breaking footage, I'm telling you. Keep checking back here, and on twitter. By the way, again, I'm taylorswift13 on twitter. There are a bunch of fake twitters that are apparently mine, and while they are amusing and creative, they're not real. :)
Well, I have some more important nonsense to get to. I'm going to go play with the light switches or the air conditioning control panel in my hotel room. Then I'm going to play the Today Show! I love you, thanks to everyone who's been voting for the CMT awards at CMT.com! Stay excellent. I adore you.

Selena Gomez & Taylor Lautner BREAKUP
Selena Gomez and Taylor Lautner have ended their love affair, according to LaineyGossip: Taylor left Vancouver last Friday. Before leaving, the two were supposed to hang out, spend time together, watch DVDs, cuddle, whatever.
Taylor stood her up. Didn't bother texting, didn't bother coming through on
their plans. They've barely communicated since. Taylor was supposedly strongly encouraged by his father and Summit not to be seen with a
girlfriend, especially as his star is on the rise.
They want him to focus on career, on the work, and on letting every little girl make believe she could be The One. He wasn't happy, but he listened. Both Selena and Taylor will be at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday.
NOOOOOO ):
I HOPE THIS IS JUST A RUMOR.

Demi Lovato summer tour details
Demi Lovato Pollstar interview: 'I really don't practice my show. I think I have two days of rehearsals. I don't really have choreographed moves or anything. I just go out there and perform. I change it up each show but it's not like we go into the studio and rehearse.'
AEG promoter Debra Rathwell revealed that Demi's tour will not be 'stripped down': 'As a concert promoter, I'm always asking, 'How few trucks and how small can it be?' And Disney will say, 'No, no, no, Debra, this is Disney! It's going to be done properly and there has to be some bells and whistles.'
The staging will be designed by the same man who put together the Jonas Brothers' show. Disney has the marketing on schedule. Advertisements for the tour are appearing on the Disney Channel and the newest album is about to drop along with her new movie Princess Protection Program.
Meet and greets become more difficult as stars get bigger. During last summer's tour with the Jonas Brothers, Demi did two meet-and-greets per day: 'The first meet-and-greet had 30 people in it and then the second one was, like, the 500 people who pre-ordered the CD. They got a free meet-and-greet after the show. So, I would stay up until two in the morning and it was awesome.'
Rathwell: 'She's done so much work. She's laid all the groundwork. Now it's my job to market, market, market, get tickets, sell them and get fans in. We don't leave until August when she goes off to make another movie.'

Selena Gomez Youtube/ new album release date/ new webseries
Selena Gomez vlog with cousin Brandon: Hi Texas, hope you're taking care
of my family! Hope you're doing well! I love you guys! God bless You Rock!
She really does sing good!
Selena Facebook update: Hey Guys! I just thought I would touch base with you to let you know how my musical journey has been going. I have had one of the greatest challenges of my life. I love every bit of it. I realize this is not my element. There will always be people who doubt you.
But, I also realize I have tons of support from my fans. I thank you for that. This is something I thought long and hard about. I know I will regret NOT doing this. I am giving it a shot. I am filming my journey through this so you can see how hard I am working to do my best. If you like what the end product..
..sounds like great, see you at my shows and I hope you have a blast listening to my album. If you don't well, I can't please everyone, no one can! What I hope my fans learn from my journey is that you should not ever let anyone bring you down or stop you from trying something you want to do.
You will be the one who will live with regret not them. I am going through change, growth and failure just like everyone else except my is open for
public scrutiny.
Not everything you try in life is a major success. I will be in an intense boot camp when I return to LA in music. I have taken my time to find my sound, I have worked hard and about to work even harder. Anybody who tries to bring me down only inspires me. I think that goes for a lot of people in the public eye.
I have been blessed to work with some amazing people. Even though I love my fans and work hard for them some things I do for myself as well. As an artist you don't grow unless you try and challenge yourself. Even some of the greatest actors and singers still train. Life is about growing not about settling.
I get back to LA soon and when I am closer to my album release (which is tentatively scheduled for Sept) I will release my web series 'Under Pressure' to let you take this journey with me. I will struggle at some things and you will see that. I will succeed at things that you will see that.
I would like to thank the people that are willing to give me this chance and all the support I have received. I will never be able to express how much that has meant to me. I look forward to sharing a very venerable time in my life! God Bless!

"Paranoid" Jonas Brothers not doing well
The Jonas Brothers, the platinum-selling tween pin-up boys who probably sold merchandise for Disney than Mickey Mouse last year, might have a reason to be Paranoid.
Their new single isn’t faring as well as a JoBros single should, on Radio Disney world nor in the real world.
Paranoid is the first single from the brotherly band’s upcoming Lines, Vines, & Trying Times isn’t exactly Burnin’ Up the radio.
The song has yet to hit the Top 40 of pop radio in its third week in release.
Radio Disney has the song at #20 on their official countdown and is more interested in playing “Live to Party,” the theme song from their sitcom.
On iTunes, the song has been in and out of the Top 100. The song currently sits at a very un-JoBro-like #91.
The Mouse House refuses to panic, although their 3D concert film didn’t match expectations and new episodes of their “JONAS” series on Disney Channel continuously get beat out in the ratings by Nickelodeon shows.
With an upcoming tour spanning three continents and the new album hitting stores in June, the band could be feeling the pressure. “We’re all about taking those gradual steps,” Nick Jonas said to reporters. Says brother Kevin, “We definitely have no expectations.”
Could this be the end of the biggest band of brothers in teen pop history? Johnny Wright, co-manager of the band who also oversaw the giant leaps to stardom of Britney Spears and NSync, says no.
“People are wrong when they say the bubble has burst. It’s just changing,” Wright told the New York Times. “We are focused on longevity and transitioning to a slightly older audience. When you do that, you risk losing some of your core fan base.”

Can't wait for the CD to come out and the World Tour to kick off! SEE YOU GUYS IN PERU & TULSA! I LOVE YOU GUYS!

How to score Taylor Swift Meet&Greets
From Hannah: My best friend and I went to a Taylor's San Diego concert on Sunday and got invited backstage to Taylor's 'T-Party'!
They said during the show Taylor picks about 20 people out of the crowd that look like her biggest fans. We got to go backstage and chill in her little portable living room after the show! We just watched TV and listened to music with her band, family and dancers until she came out to talk to us.
All 20 of us got to talk to her in our groups for about 10-15 minutes. She is so nice and so down to earth! If you are going to a concert, singing your heart out and being the biggest fan can really pay off! :]

"Paranoid"
With their hotly anticipated album — ‘Lines, Vines and Trying Times’ — less than a month away from its official release, it seems the Jonas Brothers’ schedule is more hectic than ever. Taking a quick break in their day to chat with PopEater about the exclusive premiere of the video for ‘Paranoid,’ the brothers currently find themselves in Lima, Peru, spending time with some of their more passionate fans.
“Our fans have been outside the hotel, and they’re just nuts,” Kevin says. “There were maybe 2,000 of them out there all night, chanting!”
Did they get any sleep?
“Actually, I had a great night’s sleep,” says Nick. “I slept for 12 hours!”
“It’s like they were singing us to sleep,” adds Joe.
While fans wait patiently to see the boys live and in person, the video for ‘Paranoid’ should tide them over. Meanwhile, Joe, Nick and Alex chat with PopEater about the clip, a summer tour surprise and who may have a career in professional wrestling.
Why did you choose ‘Paranoid’ as the single?
Nick: It’s just a great song to play live, and whenever the fans hear it, they’re just amazing — they sing every word. We’re so thankful the response has been so awesome.
Is the song autobiographical?
Kevin: Out of all of the songs on the album, we feel like this was one that was more of a general song. We started out with the concept of paranoia and decided to see what it was like if we threw ourselves in the shoes of someone who was experiencing it.
Describe the video’s the premise.
Nick: There are three different scenarios, and they’re all kind of rising out of this one situation. We’re all in different hallways that lead us elsewhere. So I have the car chase scene, Joe is in a wrestling ring and Kevin is seeing himself in different scenarios and it’s freaking him out.
How’d you come up with the concept?
Joe: While we were sitting around recording the song, we started coming up with ideas for how to translate it into a video, and then [directors] Tim Wheeler and Brendan Malloy presented their idea, and it was was dead on. They took a rough idea, and they really nailed it.
From when you shot your first video to now, you guys have experienced an incredible ascent. Is there any difference in the process of shooting now?
Nick: We’re always trying to one up ourselves. For example, for the tour we’re going on this summer, we’re going to have a stage that’s bigger and better than last summer. We’re always looking to do things bigger and better for our fans, and the video was the same thing. We worked with Tim and Brendan on the video for ‘Burning Up,’ and we had such a great time with them that we knew we wanted to work with them again, but we wanted to do more. There’s definitely a sense of competition with ourselves going on.
But in a healthy way?
Nick: Definitely!
Share one fun behind-the-scenes story with us.
Joe: There’s a scene where I’m in a wrestling ring, and I had to wrestle these two guys who were actually professionals. It was a little scary at times. You can imagine what it’s like to have two 200-pound men running at you full force.
Does this mean you’re not going to pursue a career in professional wrestling?
Joe: It may happen.
Source: PopEater
The Jonas Brothers have released a video for “Paranoid,” the kinda catchy lead single off Lines, Vines and Trying Times (due June 16). In the clip, a bunch of Kevin Jonas clones stand around looking confused, Joe Jonas avoids death in the wrestling wring, and Nick Jonas engages in a high-speed chase with a femme fatale-type girl. First question: Should Nick Jonas really be driving without a parent or legal guardian? Second question: Out of all the Jonases, why pick Kevin to be cloned? Third question: The video is clearly another step by the Bros. to look more adult and grown-up. Do you think they pull it off?

LMAO, I LOVE TAHT REVIEW
–And MTV’s Buzzworthy Review —
I could cut and paste all of the words to “The Pledge of Allegiance” into this post and you probably wouldn’t even care, notice, or even read it, right? Because you’re probably already watching the Jonas Brothers‘ new video, “Paranoid,” directed by The Malloys, who also directed “Burnin’ Up.”
So, since you’ve already watched “Paranoid,” or you’re watching it again right this very second, are you on board with me that while “Burnin’ Up” was hilarious, and “Love Bug” was a gorgeous period piece, and “Tonight” was a moving tribute to Jonas fans, “Paranoid” is the Jonas Brothers’ most sophisticated, compelling, funny, and exciting video yet? Are you even reading this? Are you still breathing? Come back to me!

Jonas Brothers: soon over ?!
The world-conquering superpowers of teen-pop juggernaut the Jonas Brothers have once again been called into question — and this time not just by some know-nothing blogger! In yesterday’s New York Times, Brook Barnes adds up the twin disappointments of the trio’s low-grossing 3-D movie and low-rated TV show and asks, “Are the Jonas Brothers fizzling as a full-blown Walt Disney Company franchise?” Surprisingly, their manager and the president of their record label say no. But it’s plainly obvious that the Jonases haven’t become the money-printing, three-headed Zac Efron that we once had them pegged for. So, why not?
Is it their credibility problem? Specifically, do they have too much credibility? Their albums and tickets to their concerts are still selling reasonably well, despite the collapsed economy and the fact that nobody pays for music anymore. But Disney — a corporation accustomed to extracting Hannah Montana–sized paychecks from its teenage laborers — needs the Jonases to be a global megafranchise, not just simple pop stars, which means selling lunch boxes, movies, and TV shows.
It’s interesting that the two blemishes on the trio’s mostly spotless track record are Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience and JONAS, their Monkees-style Disney Channel kids’ show. While Efron and other High School Musical alums struggle to be taken more seriously, the Jonases (who play their own instruments, co-write their songs, and sing live at concerts) are in the hilarious position of having to convert fans of their music to their less serious (but potentially more profitable) endeavors. (One fan tells the Times: “My friends aren’t really talking about [their TV] show … I like them as singers.”)
So why haven’t today’s sensible teenagers fallen in line? We have no idea! We’re already on record as having enjoyed their last album, and find their recent failures as baffling as Miley Cyrus’s continued success, proving that we know nothing. By the way, have you heard their new single? We’ve embedded it below. We think it’s awesome, which makes us worried the Jonas Brothers might soon be over.

subscribe features fashion wiseguy video blogs news style manual details JUSTIN GASTON: THE TROUBLE WITH DATING MILEY CYRUS
Gaston—unlike Cyrus, who was booking acting gigs at 10—has arrived in the world of celebrity with little time for preparation. After a modeling agent discovered him three years ago, the devout Christian from Pineville, Louisiana, spent three miserable months in New York before heading to L.A. to transform himself into the next John Mayer. His shaggy good looks landed him a spot on Nashville Star, on which he discovered an ally in host Billy Ray Cyrus—himself a churchgoer with former pro-ball aspirations—who summoned Gaston for frequent powwows in his tour bus. When Gaston was booted after only three episodes, Cyrus' on-air farewell was lavish. "This guy's gonna be a big, big movie star," he said. "I'm calling it right now! Tom Cruise, look out!"
"I kinda saw it coming just with the way Billy Ray was with him," says Ruby Cantu, a Nashville Star producer who lived with the contestants. Soon, Billy Ray ushered Gaston onto the Hannah Montana set. "It's like if you had a 16-year-old daughter who said, 'Oh, Daddy, he's so cute—I want to meet him,'" Cantu says. "That's exactly what happened."
Cantu says it's real affection: "puppy love . . . holding hands and being cute with each other." Others wonder. "It seems like a de facto advertisement," says Courtney Hazlett, MSNBC's pop-culture columnist of the YouTube video of Cyrus dancing and swooning while Gaston sings. Is Gaston a girl's first love or part of a stage dad's cynical ploy to help his multi-million-dollar daughter forge a post-Disney career?
In contrast to Cyrus' ex, Nick Jonas, Gaston hasn't spent his life hermetically sealed in a Magic Kingdom turret; take, for instance, the photo shoot Gaston did for the online underwear retailer International Jock, the mention of which makes him cringe. "It's not something my mom would be proud of," he says. He scoffs at the Internet chatter suggesting he's been living in the Cyrus home—"No! I live in an apartment in North Hollywood with two guys!"—and seems at a loss when asked basic questions about his girlfriend. He won't identify the person who repeatedly calls his iPhone during the interview. Finally he hurries off to take the call behind closed doors.
Another mystery: the status of his music career. All he'll disclose is that he's involved with people who are tinkering with his image. It's a surprising admission, perhaps, though somewhat less so when you consider what he says he'd choose to be if he weren't Justin Gaston: "One of those little lapdogs that gets petted all day," he says. "You know, they wake up, get fed, get attention. I like attention. I'd like to be one of those little dogs. Is that weird?"

Mitchel Musso 'I Want Miley Cyrus To Be With Some One Who's Her Age..'
Mitchel Musso interview excepts from MyYearbook: Are you friends with Miley Cyrus in real life, too? She's been my friend since day one in Hannah. We talk all the time. She's such a crazy girl. She'll just text me random stuff, and call and start singing for no reason.
That's the kind of relationship that we have. It's like a brother-sister thing. She calls me for advice with her boy when they go through certain things, and we try to get through it. I'll go hang out with her, and hopefully make everything better.
Are you a fan of the guy she's dating right now? There's been a lot of controversy surrounding that. Uhh, ehhh. Ehhh, whatever. I don't know. Don't ask me. That's too much for me, you know?
I don't want to say anything wrong because I think she's such a sweet girl. They are great, very wholesome people. So, I'm not worried about it. I don't know if I agree with it. He's 21. I want her to be with someone who is her age.
Is your music writing based off of a party lifestyle? Sure, definitely. I know you'll find a lot of musicians who say, 'this song is about this girl who broke my heart and blah, blah, blah. See, it's a little bit different for me. I grew up being an actor, so when I'm writing I like to make up a story.
It doesn't have to be true, but it's like I'm a character playing a role. Is your haircut part of a new image? Everybody's freaking out on me because I didn't tell anybody that I was going to do it. I just chopped it off and dyed it black. It was time for a change.
I think it's a good change. A lot of people are telling me that I look like Jared Leto in Requiem for a Dream. That's probably a terrible person to pair me up with because that was a crazy character, but just his look was cool.
As long as you don't get the track marks on your arm, that's not so Disney-friendly. Yeah, no, no, no. It's just his hair. With so much going on in your life right now, how do you stay focused on your dreams? This is what I love to do, this is my passion.. I was born into this.
Will you steer away from acting to pursue music fulltime? I have acting stuff lined up, but I'm really pushing for music right now. I've been acting all my life, but I started off a musician. I just never wanted to show it.
To be completely honest with you, I didn't want to be another Disney kid who did music. One day, my older brother said, 'You should definitely do it.' Now I've got his help with being cool. It's not just the Disney channel. I've got all my boys trying to help me be me, not just Oliver Oken.

Jonas Brothers Expanding Past Disney
In the end nobody had the temerity — or the opportunity, since the interview session was cut short — to ask the tough question: Are the Jonas Brothers fizzling as a full-blown Walt Disney Company franchise?
It’s a notion that Disney, the world’s largest media company, thinks is ludicrous. “Hot as a pistol” is how Abbey Konowitch, general manager of Hollywood Records, the Disney-owned label, describes them.
Mr. Konowitch noted that the pop band’s summer tour, a three-continent extravaganza built around the brothers’ fourth studio album, “Lines, Vines and Trying Times,” sold over 800,000 tickets in its first weekend, no small feat in a dismal economy. The new CD, inspired in part by the music of Neil Diamond, arrives in stores on June 16 amid a flood of publicity, including a Rolling Stone cover and a free concert in Central Park.
The Jonas Brothers are trying to expand beyond the Disney footprint and shouldn’t be evaluated as a company franchise, said Johnny Wright, the group’s co-manager. “We consult with Disney, but Disney doesn’t tell us what to do,” he said. The band’s outside efforts include a line of branded energy drinks and starring roles in “Walter the Farting Dog,” a movie for 20th Century Fox based on the best-selling children’s book. (The trio had cameo roles of a sort in “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” which was the No. 1 movie at the box office over the weekend.)
“People are wrong when they say the bubble has burst,” Mr. Wright continued. “It’s just changing. We are focused on longevity and transitioning to a slightly older audience. When you do that, you risk losing some of your core fan base.”
Still, Disney is counting on the cherubic musicians — Kevin, 21, Joe, 19, and Nick, 16 — to be more than just pop stars. The company’s profit engines are creative franchises like “Hannah Montana” that spawn merchandising, movie and theme park spin-offs, and Disney has been putting considerable muscle into broadening the Jonases’ beyond music.
So far results have been mixed.
Their debut film, “The Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience,” was a dud, selling just $19.2 million in tickets at North American theaters in February. Disney had hoped that the movie would generate sales of about $40 million, according to a senior studio executive.
Mr. Konowitch said expectations for “The 3D Concert Experience” were unfairly high, noting that the band had just come off a lengthy tour that enabled most fans to see the trio in person. Mr. Wright said, “It irks me when people say the movie was a flop. If $19 million is a flop, I’ll take it.”
Mr. Konowitch also doused some cold water on Miley Cyrus’s drawing power, saying that her concert movie, “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds,” became a phenomenon that sold $65.3 million in 2008 partly because the Jonas Brothers appeared in it as well. Ms. Cyrus did not appear in the Jonas movie.
Television is also proving a bit bumpy for them. “Jonas,” a new Disney Channel comedy that stars the brothers, had its debut on May 2 to an audience of 2.4 million kids ages 6 to 14, the target demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research.
That was enough to put the show at No. 1 — beating tough counterprogramming on Nickelodeon — but it was also Disney Channel’s second-lowest live-action premiere in nearly four years. The target audience sunk sharply in its second week, but the show rebounded. The ratings performance is surprising given that “Camp Rock,” the Disney Channel musical starring the brothers, was the No. 1 cable telecast for 2008.
Does the band feel pressure to have a big summer?
“We’re all about taking those gradual steps,” Nick Jonas said. His brother Kevin said, “We definitely have no expectations.”
Lucy Schiller, 8, has been a follower of the Jonas Brothers since she first heard their hit “Year 3000” two years ago. She was one of 600 invited fans at the El Rey Theater, where the band was filming a six-song concert video that will appear exclusively on Walmart.com starting June 9.
“I’m downloading the new songs off iTunes the second they come out,” she said. But this third grader never made it to the band’s movie and still hasn’t seen the Disney Channel series. “My friends aren’t really talking about the show,” she said. “I like them as singers.”
A sold-out tour and strong response to the new album will almost certainly bolster interest in the sitcom. And perhaps the show’s slow start is just a case of growing pains. “I think it takes time for music stars to be looked at as television stars,” Mr. Konowitch said.
Mr. Wright, whose experience with boy bands includes managing ’N Sync, said that the Jonas Brothers may no longer be the best fit with Disney Channel’s young audience. “They agreed to do the show two years ago, but it was delayed for various reasons,” he said. “They’re in a different place now.”
In a statement Disney Channel said it was “pleased with the early ratings” for the show, noting that it has reached nearly 10 million total viewers over its first six telecasts. Jonas Brothers fans, the company added, have given DisneyChannel.com its best results for 2009.
“The show is a great learning process,” Joe Jonas said. “Acting is something I want to get into a lot more.”
Disney Channel has said it hoped the show would open a beachhead on Saturday nights, long dominated by Nickelodeon. If “Jonas” can dent ratings for “iCarly,” the Nickelodeon show opposite it that is rapidly becoming a phenomenon among kids, the brothers’ sitcom will be considered a big success internally.
Even so, if the Jonas Brothers are truly going to cross over, they need to do it with a punishing speed. Children 6 to 14 — the so-called tween market — have always been fickle, and allegiances come and go faster than ever. In industry parlance the band needs to strike before its core fans — young girls — “age out” of the experience.
The band’s last album, “Little Bit Longer,” was released in August and has sold 1.52 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Sales of their 2007 album, “Jonas Brothers,” have reached 1.82 million. Worldwide, Jonas Brothers albums have sold 8.1 million CDs, according to Disney.
“This album is a big step for us as artists, musicians and songwriters,” Nick Jonas said. “We’re pouring it out of our hearts.”
